Anegan Review:-

Anegan Review:-

Plot:-
Madhu (Amyra Dastur) a game designer comes to know that she & her colleague Ashwin (Dhanush) were lovers in 4 different previous births using a special
hypnotism method, when it seemed like all is well, her memories from those previous births begin to disturb her present life.
Performances:-
Dhanush as Murugappa/Kali/Ashwin - Even for a talented actor like Dhanush, this triple role subject is a difficult thing to do, as all 3 characters have a different body language, different slang, & even their face expressions are completely different. but nonetheless Dhanush has managed to get into the skin of his characters, especially his performance as Kali deserves a special mention.
Amyra Dastur as Samudhra/Kalyani/Madhu - We all know what would a heroine's fate be If she makes her debut with Dhanush, she would usually get overshadowed by Dhanush's performance, but Amyra is an exemption, its hard to believe that she is a newcomer, she has done her best in all the 3 roles, but something went wrong in the final output, her voice didn't suite her in the role of Madhu, and her dialogues were weakly written by Subha, baring that I'm sure she would be a top contender this year for Best Debut Actress.
Karthik as Ravi Kiran - He's character is very stylish, and Karthik has given a good performance but, just like Amyra, Karthik is also forced to utter weak dialogues, and to make things worst, they are also terribly lengthy in 2nd half, could have been used better.
Ashish Vidyarthi as Commissioner Gopinath - Despite of minimal screentime, his role is very powerful and he appears for an important scene that makes unexpected revelations about the past.
Others were good, Jagan in particular brought some humor in the promising first half.
Technicalities: -
Cinematography by Om Prakash - The film is set in 4 different time periods, but all of them have been colorfully shot by Om Prakash, the visuals retain the feel of their respective time periods but are still fresh & don't look like outdated work.
Music by Harris Jayaraj - His BGM is good & songs are decent, "Roja Kadale" & Thodu Vaanam are like remixes of Harris previous compositions, but the real problem comes when that 2 songs pop out of nowhere and fail to sync with flow of the film.
Editing by Anthony - Once he used to to be a great Editor but off late his works have started to become pretty average, he had sharply cut almost all the scenes in Anegan but plays spoilsport in the last 30 minutes, it would feel like he could have easily chopped at least 10 minutes of the lengthy scenes.
Art Direction,Costume Design, Makeup & Hairstyle - These are essential technical departments that work hard behind the scenes to show the vast difference between the time periods. Their work in 1962 Burma scenes are award worthy.
Screenplay & Dialogues by Subha & KV Anand:-
The screenplay of the film is heavily influenced by several films that were made based on re-incarnation like The Myth, Magadheera(Maaveran in Tamil), Cloud Atlas ... Amyra's character is inspired by Kamal Haasan's character in Enakkul Oruvan, but despite all that Anegan has managed to look very fresh to some extent. Logic is well maintained, the real life historical events that really took place are blended smoothly with the film, the dialogues too were written keeping as per the culture & mindset of the characters in their respective time periods but after a point in the present time period they become major weaknesses of the film.
Direction by KV Anand:-
KV Anand has stepped out from his comfort zone to make this out & out romantic entertainer laced with a themes of Reincarnation. Despite of a few notable flaws in the Screenplay, his work as a Director is remarkable.
Plus:-
Acting of Dhanush & Amyra Dastur
Production Design
Costume Design
Production Design
Hairstyle & Makeup
Logical connections of Fact & Fiction
Minus:-
Lip syncs
Placement of Thodu Vaanam song
Weak Dialogues
Last 30 minutes
The Final Word : Anegan is worth watching for its rich production values and relatively fresher theme, but doesn't quite live up to the larger ambitions of the film's story line.   ..!!
Rating : 7/10
