Plot:-

   The film is narrated from the perspective of the lead character Sathya Dev (Ajith Kumar), who is struggling to strike a balance between his professional life as a Police Officer & his responsibilities as a family man. 

Performances:-

Ajith Kumar as Sathya Dev - That Thala, Action Hero etc. are just brands and Hash tags for this film, but rather than depending on them alone, Gautham Menon has brought to light the least explored side of Ajith's versatile acting skills, His character is designed on the lines of Bryan Millis from Taken & the cult anti hero Dirty Harry. Ajith has done more than just walking and shooting punches, Sathya Dev is not just any ordinary cop, He is also a responsible Father, a guilt ridden Fiance & frustrated common man. Ajith got into in depth of his role and breathed freshness in every phase of the different timelines in Yennai Arindhaal. 

Trisha as Hemanikha - Her role is that of a Dance Teacher & Stage Drama artist, who is also actively involved in charity, Apart from that she also shares a romantic bond with Sathya Dev, an intense love story maturely performed by Trisha.  

Arun Vijay as Victor - Another great villain from Gautham Menon, Perhaps one of the best villains of all time, Arun Vijay breathes fire in his powerful role, especially in his confrontation scenes with Ajith, I'm sure Ajith fans would have felt insecure when he sometimes overshadows the star in some scenes, Ajith's character may have well sketched but Arun Vijay is nothing short of it, His career best performance. 

Anushka Shetty as Themozhi - Her performance is good and unlike her previous roles in Star hero films, in this one, her character has something to do with the story and in one time, becomes a major driving force in moving the story forward. 

Vivek as Revolver Richard - Despite of the having a well sketched role, Vivek is forgettable, sometimes when he tries to bring in humor for a serious scene, his intention backfires & rather leaves the audience irritated in 1st Half. 

Others are Adequate in their roles, Child Artist Ankitha & Parvathi Nair deserve a special mention among the minor supporting characters. 

Technicalities:- 

Cinematography by Dan Macarthur - For a realistic thriller like Yennai Arindhaal, Camera work is important, Dan has done an amazing camera work, the major highlights of his work is evident in scenes where artificial lights of cars and blinking bulbs is to put to good use to provide goosebumps for the Audience. 

Editing by Anthony - Baring a few overlong scenes in 1st half, his Editing is decent. 

Music by Harris Jayaraj - He is almost back to form, the songs have come out well, they are not that great but are really pleasant to hear, BGM is in Top notch, despite of a little hangover from Vettaiyadu Villayadu, its still a major plus of the film. 

Screenplay by Gautham Menon, Sreedhar Raghavan & Thyagarajan Kumararaja:-

The Gangster scenes written by Thyagarajan Kumararaja have come out well, Gautham Menon has done a excellent job in romantic scenes & sentimental scenes involving Ajith & his on-screen daughter, While Sreedhar Raghavan's work is average in 1st half, few scenes remind of Vettaiyadu Villayadu and Tom Cruise's Knight & Day, doesn't sync well with the flow of the film. 

Direction by Gautham Vasudev Menon :-

    Gautham doesn't let us down in any way, he promised that he would a give a simple character driven film, and lives us to his words.
