IMAKKAA NODIGAL : THE LAST STOP BEFORE SEPTEMBER RUSH BEGINS :-
This long in the making Psychological Thriller starring Atharvaa Murali, Nayanthara & Anurag Kashyap is gearing up for release tomorrow. Imaikkaa Nodigal was a really ambitious project when it went on floors but as shoot progressed, budget issues began to crop up as Director Ajay Gnanamuthu wanted to shoot many important scenes in live locations. While the idea was bold, the team faced many practical difficulties which caused a delay of over a year and the film went over budget by 30%. The final landing cost is said to be around 20 crores, Cameo Films are negotiating with their financiers to let them release Imaikkaa Nodigal first and pay back dues later. Financiers haven't given their final word yet, but Cameo Films is looking to clear all issues by midnight.
96 :-
96 starring Vijay Sethupathi was initially planned for March 2018 release but couldn't make it because of TFPC strike, one thing lead to the other and 96 had to make way for Junga to release first. Though the teaser, trailer and songs have been warmly welcomed, the road to success is not going to be smooth for 96. If tomorrow's Imaikkaa Nodigal over performs in weekdays, then it would mean 96 may not get expected no. of screens and shows in A centers as both films have similar target audience. Making things worse is there is only 6 days breathing space for the film as September 13th will have 3 mainstream releases Seema Raja, U Turn and Naragasooran, the first film targets B & C centers while the other 2 depend on A centers, the situation 96 currently is in is similar to Kaatru Veliyidai.
SEEMA RAJA :-
Seema Raja is backed by a skilled production company and blockbuster combination. Touted to be Sivakarthikeyan's first full length Mass entertainer. Theater charting is almost over in most centers and is gearing up for a wide release on September 13th but here is the catch, its not Imaikkaa Nodigal or 96 that poses as a threat to Seema Raja, its Saamy Square. Being a sequel to Chiyaan Vikram's 2003 blockbuster, the trolls on songs and trailers were all over the internet but couldn't tame the buzz Saamy Square is carrying.
SAAMY SQUARE (SEPTEMBER 20TH) :-
Like said earlier, Trailer and songs went viral despite trolls working over time and Saamy Square has potential to revive the mass following Chiyaan Vikram had till Anniyan. If the movie clicks, it'll boost the box office prospects of Dhruva Natchathiram, another Chiyaan Vikram starrer that targets a completely different set of audience.
Despite all of that, Seema Raja is a equally strong threat to Saamy Square as much as Saamy Square is to Seema Raja. The former has blockbuster combination and the latter is the 2nd installment of a blockbuster franchise. Few theaters have already signed 2 to 3 weeks agreement for Seema Raja which means Saamy Square will have to depend on theaters that signed Seema Raja on a more liberal agreement and if Seema Raja is welcomed the same way audience welcomed Varuthapadatha Valibar Sangam & Rajini Murugan then these theaters may not give priority to Saamy Square in main screens or may not the screen the film at all. Both films have the same target audience.
CHEKKA CHIVANTHA VAANAM :-
Mani Ratnam's return to the gangster genre has a huge star cast with the likes of Simbu, Vijay Sethupathi, Arvind Swami, Arun Vijay, Jyothika, Aishwarya Rajesh, Prakash Raj, Thyagarajan and more. The trailer has went viral on Youtube and the soon to be launched songs are expected to top the charts.
While the buzz on the film looks comparatively better than Kaatru Veliyidai, its also cursed with the fact of releasing immediately a week after a biggie's release like the rest of the September films. When Chekka Chivantha Vaanam hits the screens, Saamy Square & Seema Raja will still be there, thus it lands at a place where two biggies would already be struggling to get space.
On the other hand, films with comparatively lesser buzz like Boomerang, Sathuranga Vettai 2 are also trying to squeeze into an already over crowded September.
THE NEED FOR A HEALTHY BREATHING SPACE :-
Generally every film (biggies in particular) with positive WOM needs at least 2 weeks free run on an average and a decent 3rd weekend turnout to breakeven so that it could make profits from the remainder of its theatrical run. Here forget about 2 weeks, a biggie may not even get a comfortable 2nd weekend.
Starting from tomorrow, theaters are gonna be caught in an extremely complex situation. They gotta retain the previous week's release with good no. of shows while also assuring the new release gets shows on a bigger scale, is it possible to please a film's makers without pissing off another one ? We'll find out in September.
Parallelly financiers are putting pressure on some September release producers to settle dues fast which means there is a chance of few films not making it on the planned release date.
