2017 Kollywood First Quarter Report and an extended look at April releases :-

THE TN TOP 5 :-

1. BAIRAVAA :-

Gross : 58.2 crores

Though Vijay's
Bairavaa was a flop elsewhere, it performed better in TN, ultimately recovering 40 crores share against Rights valued @ 50 crores. Chengalpet, Tirunelveli Kanyakumari & North South Arcot were the least affected territories while Coimbatore (Kovai a.k.a. CBE) faced the most loss. Considering that the film had a flop director and negative talk from first show itself, its performance comes as a surprise. Currently its the 4th highest grosser for Vijay in both TN & Worldwide. A Telugu dubbed version is being planned for May end release .

2. SI 3 a.k.a C3 a.k.a. S3 a.k.a. SINGAM 3 or WHATEVER :-

Gross : 43.2 crores

The film was not even supposed to be a 2017 release in the first place.
Read : The Butterfly Effect : Repeated Postponements of Singam 3

Singam 3 commercially is regarded as a massive disappointment, critic reviews were the least to be concerned about since Singam 2 also opened to mixed reviews, but the film made a lot of money. Feb/March is the worst period to release big budget films since audience will be busy with other commitments. Singam 3 proved it yet again, the opening was below expectations though the film remained steady throughout the 4 days weekend, the film dropped in weekdays. In the later days, weekend occupancy had considerable difference with weekdays. At the end of the run, the final gross was way behind Singam 2, 7am Arivu & Singam while barely equaling Maattrraan's share. 100 crores is no longer a big deal, the previous month's disappointment Bairavaa also grossed 100 crores. For the kind of pre release biz these two command, 100 crores is no longer a benchmark. They can claim their film is a blockbuster when it does 200 crores or more.

3. KAVAN :-

Gross : 25.2 crores

Vijay Sethupathi - KV Anand's Kavan is the only film in the first quarter to have had a remarkable run for theaters in all centers. That came as a surprise since posters, stills and promos barely got the hype such a medium budget film needed. The film is KV Anand's first clean hit in TN since KO. But still based on return of investment, its just a break even project for the producers as outside TN it didn't perform upto Naanum Rowdy Dhaan's level. Kavan had clashed with Nayanthara's horror film DORA and had to deal with Mani Ratnam's Kaatru Veliyidai in the 2nd weekend. To handle Kaatru Veliyidai, Kavan producers agreed to adjust share ratio in favor of theaters to retain big screens and shows.

4. MOTTA SHIVA KETTA SHIVA :-

Gross : 19.5 crores

Perhaps the worst reviewed film of the year,
Motta Shiva Ketta Shiva still shocked few people when it closed with 19.5 crores gross. The film opened to a mere 2.51 crores, reasonably behind its closest comparison Bogan but it somehow went ahead in final gross, was it because Singam 3 ruined Bogan's 2nd weekend ? has Lawrence become a bankable tier 2 actor ? or is it just that MSKS's competitors were far far weaker. The last mentioned guess is the closest to being a realistic explanation. Motta Shiva Ketta Shiva TN Rights were sold for a whopping 20 crores, obviously its a disaster for distributors but since theaters in B & C couldn't find a replacement, they had a no other choice, so they had to continue playing it.

5. BOGAN :-

Gross : 16.55 crores

As mentioned in The Butterfly Effect : Repeated Postponements of Singam 3
Bogan is one of those films badly affected by Singam 3's repeated postponements. As per the best knowledge of distributors, Bogan had potential to become a blockbuster had it released on the occasion of Christmas 2016. The repeated postponements had reasonably dented the hype and despite being Jayam Ravi's biggest release, it opened and closed below Thani Oruvan & Miruthan.

ONLY 3 GENUINE HITS :-

Ironically except
Kavan, none of the films in top 5 were hits. Vijay Antony's Yaman collected 6.1 crores share, settling as a safe project for everyone involved while the low budget crime thriller Maanagaram was a smash hit in the 3C's and a decent hit overall despite bombing in Telugu.

NOT HITS BUT MADE THEIR PRESENCE FELT :-

KUTTRAM 23 :-

Gross : 8 crores

Although it had a decent opening and remarkable run in A centers, it was a safe venture only for distributors and theaters, the producers couldn't recover their budget. The bad release date is to be blamed,
Motta Shiva Ketta Shiva took away chances of screens expansion in the 2nd weekend and like mentioned in Singam 3, Feb/March is a dry season for movies. Still the film and his performance won Arun Vijay appreciation from audience, it'll ensure his next thriller with Magizh Thirumeni will get better reception If its good.

GHAZI :-

Gross : 4.05 crores

Despite Ghazi's release date and status as a dubbing film, it over performed fellow Feb 17th releases and grossed 4.05 crores. The film had nil hype in Tamil and only WOM helped it gross that far, prior to release it was expected to be a washout but performed above expectations, though its still not a clean hit. Rana has become a Pan-India recognizable face, with proper planning, he can become his generation's Nagarjuna. Nag had his share of reasonable success in the past like Udhayam (Shiva). Udhayam rights were bought for 85 Lakhs and it closed with 4.5 crores gross, not a mean feat for a dubbing film in 1990.

KADUGU :-

Gross : 3.4 crores

Backing from Suriya's 2D Entertainment ensured this modern day vigilante film
Kadugu to get wider reach, again not a hit but the film performed better than expected and is still being discussed by a section of the audience.

ADHE KANGAL :-

Yet another victim of bad circumstances and nil hype. Adhe Kangal was rushed to a Republic Day release following Singam 3's postponement. Despite getting decent reviews, the film collected only 1.5 crores share because of the low opening and less than a week of breathing space. The female lead's performance is being touted as one of the most under rated performances of the year and the song Thandhiraa has become popular post release.

OTHER LANGUAGE FILMS :-

HINDI :-

1) Raaes : 2.75 crores

2) Kaabil(Hindi+Tamil) : 2 crores

3) Badrinath Ki Dulhania : 1.72 crores

TELUGU :-

1) Katamarayudu : 1.74 crores

2) Khaidi No 150 : 1.52 crores Share : 58 Lakhs

3) Gautami Putra Satakarni : 73 Lakhs

MALAYALAM :-

1) Munthirivallikal Thalikkumbol : 61 Lakhs

2) Ezra : 43 Lakhs

3) Jomonte Suvisheshangal : 39.46 Lakhs
4) The Great Father : 29 Lakhs
5) Angamaly Diaries : N/A
Take Off was also a hit but gross not available and Sakhavu not included since it didn't release in the first quarter.

BAAHUBALI 2 STARING AT 60 CRORES TN CLOSING SHARE ? :-

April was a disastrous month for Kollywood in 2017 with a 3 back to back disasters Kaatru Veliyidai, Sivalinga & Kadamban and a below average grosser Pa Paandi.
After special shows got cancelled early morning,
Baahubali 2 opened to packed houses throughout TN and became the first bilingual film to get a double digit opening in TN. The film has already broken the 1st week gross record of Kabali and is all set for a monstrous 2nd weekend. Till date except Endhiran (64 crores), no other film has collected more than 60 crores share. Insiders feel Baahubali 2 has good chances to do so and thus it has justified the Non-Rajini record price it was bought for.
