2018 Year End Report :-

THE TN TOP 5 :-

1. SARKAR  :-

Gross : 127 crores

The right phrase to sum up
Sarkar's box office performance is "Good but not good enough". Its Vijay's highest grosser but fell short of Mersal in few territories outside the 3C's (Chennai, Chengalpet, Coimbatore). The AR Murugadoss factor induced distributors to make a blatant overestimation of Sarkar's potential.

Before Diwali 2012,
Vijay's best share was Nanban (TN Share : 28 crores). Thuppakki area-wise rights were sold in 35 crores ratio, distributors were hoping the film would at least breakeven but to everyone's surprise, Thuppakki's content clicked big time and collected 44.6 crores share in full run. Thuppakki's success was a giant leap that placed Vijay only next to Superstar Rajinikanth whose Industry Hit Enthiran collected 64 crores share).

Fast forward by 7 years,
Vijay is currently ahead of Rajinikanth in TN & Kerala.

Being the 3rd film from
Thuppakki combo, Sarkar was bought for 79.5 crores which was later adjusted to 77.5 crores after North South Arcot distributor couldn't pay the price he initially agreed to give. Still Sarkar remained under pressure to surpass Baahubali 2 Tamil version's shares to breakeven.

Sarkar started off with an all time record opening but couldn't sustain much after the 6 days extended weekend and finally settled for a lifetime share of 72 crores. Sarkar could have been the first film to collect 90 crores share in TN If it had content as good as Thuppakki.

2. 2.0  :-

Gross : 119 crores

2.0's fate was sealed the day it was announced as a November 29th Release.
Enthiran
may have been a pre diwali release but it had unprecedented hype and no biggie was slated for release on Diwali.

Same can't be said for
2.0 which released just weeks after Sarkar and also on a month end. Apart from this, 2.0 was riding on low buzz because of multiple postponements. After a very low opening weekend, 2.0 went on to have a long run throughout TN but southern TN final gross totals fell behind Enthiran as the low opening did enough damage.

There is a misconception that
2.0 worked only with class audience but the fact is it did well only in 3D Theaters. The 3C's had enough 3D theaters through which 2.0 had record footfalls. In Southern TN, LYCA did its best by funding 3D converting expense of few theaters but the no. of 3D theaters were still not good enough for a film of 2.0's scale. Nevertheless since its an own release by LYCA, 2.0 can be termed as a below average grosser based on its superb 3D theaters run in TN.

3. KAALA  :-

Gross : 57.1 crores

4. KADAIKUTTY SINGAM  :-

Gross : 49 crores

Karthi's biggest hit Kadaikutty Singam was a rage in rural centers leaving lot of people in shock including producer Suriya. The lifetime gross and footfalls were more than all Suriya films in the last 4 to 5 years. Kollywood had a couple of rural hits in recent years but none like Kadaikutty Singam. While lot of distributors had credited the film's genre, they haven't been able to say what in particular impressed its target audience.

Insplag met an exhibitor from Vellore to talk about films. Kadaikutty Singam was part of our discussion. Both of us had similar opinions about the film's flaws but as an exhibitor he knew audience pulse better. To avoid miscommunication, I'll post what he said as it is without inserting my opinion.

"Kadaikutty Singam might be old school but its not outdated. While the melodrama is slightly overdone in few scenes, interior TN audience were able to connect with them because they are more emotional than urban people by default".

"You've forgot to notice
Kadaikutty Singam is also a progressive film in the rural genre. There is this scene where Karthi beats villains who interfere when Priya Bhavani Shankar was talking with a male friend. Karthi doesn't try to moral police Priya, he trusts and helps when her privacy was invaded, it got rousing response in theaters".

"Even the temple scene was neatly concluded despite coming dangerously close to becoming a TV serial. The culture cliche in rural films was also broken when
Karthi says he considers his aunt's daughters as his sisters, he can't marry them even If culture/tradition says so."

From what he said, I understood
Kadaikutty Singam may not be perfect but its much better than an average rural film and it deserved to be a huge success.

5. SEEMA RAJA :-

Gross : 47.1 crores

Sivakarthikeyan-Ponram combo teamed up for the 3rd time, a hattrick was expected but the film opened to negative response and ultimately became the first overall flop in Sivakarthikeyan's career.

In TN however the outcome wasn't entirely bad.
Seema Raja was given to Velaikkaran distributors on advance basis in 30 crores ratio and they managed to recover more than 80% despite the release of Saamy Square & Chekka Chivantha Vaanam. Seema Raja can be termed as an average grosser in TN. A strong proof of the command Sivakarthikeyan has over family audience.

A friendship going sour will hurt a leading actor more than a box office failure.
Seema Raja didn't make it for early morning shows because of the deficit from Velaikkaran.

The film was in the making for way too long which resulted in loan interests going up.

That's not it, 24 AM Studios was also paying rent for the costly slum set which they didn't dismantle till little over a month after
Velaikkaran released. When there was urgent need of money to settle financiers, Sivakarthikeyan took responsibility for it and ensured Seema Raja was screened at least from noon shows.

Looking at how his films are becoming cost failures,
Sivakarthikeyan was sensing Lingusamy vibes in his friend RD Raja. Soon after that Sivakarthikeyan signed a 2 film deal with Sun Pictures and was also in talks to work with LYCA Productions.

RD Raja was irked by his friend's recent actions which resulted in a fallout and SK 14 was stalled temporarily. But they've come back to good terms after seeking advice from well wishers. SK 14 has resumed shoot but given the extensive post production work involved SK 15 (Directed by Irumbuthirai fame PS Mithran) might release before SK 14.

FILM WITH HIGHEST RETURN OF INVESTMENT :-

Tamizh Padam 2 had the 3rd highest opening of 2018 after Kaala & Thaanaa Serndha Koottam at the time of release. Though the film couldn't sustain beyond 10 days, it had grossed more than enough for the budget. Tamizh Padam 2 was an own release by Y Not Studios & Trident Arts,

By the end of its TN theatrical run
Tamizh Padam 2 had collected distributor share of 12 crores, more than double of what was required to breakeven. With the revenue coming from satellite, digital and markets outside TN, the makers earned double of what they spent.

FILMS THAT COULD HAVE DONE BETTER :-

Its impossible to start without a mention of 2.0. When there was over 500 crores hanging in the balance, this deserved the best possible release date but November 29th was locked, a post Deepawali release immediately followed by Half yearly exam season.

Mani Ratnam may have made a blockbuster comeback with Chekka Chivantha Vaanam but its also a film which had more potential and was aiming at a lifetime TN gross of over 60 crores. But 96 & Ratsasan released the immediate next weekend and slowed down Chekka Chivantha Vaanam post which it had to settle for a lifetime share of 24 crores.

Seema Raja had a shot at breakeven but couldn't make it because of Saamy Square & Chekka Chivantha Vaanam. Vada Chennai which released a month later was also just inches away from breakeven but couldn't make it because of Ratsasan which remained super strong even weeks after release.

Christmas winner Kanaa managed to collect 2/3 of its potential because of clash with 5 films, had it been a summer release Kanaa would have performed on par with a Nayanthara film. Another Christmas release Jayam Ravi's Adanga Maru also managed to do more than 90% recovery but couldn't breakeven because of clash.

At last we have
Pariyerum Perumal, its no doubt a Word-of-Mouth dependent film but such films will get screens increase in the next weekend, something Pariyerum Perumal struggled to get despite good per screen occupancy and WOM. Nevertheless in the long run, Pariyerum Perumal emerged as a marginally profitable venture for its producer Pa. Ranjith.

THINGS IN STORE FOR SUMMER 2019 :-

The year has seen 4 commercially successful ventures so far out of which 2 of them (Viswasam & LKG) were blockbusters while the other 2 films Petta & Dhilluku Dhuddu 2 are the 2nd highest grossers for Rajinikanth & Santhanam.

Magizh Thirumeni's crime thriller Thadam starring Arun Vijay is releasing on March 1st alongside Oviya's 90 ML. On the 29th of the same of the month, National award winner Thiagarajan Kumararaja's Anthology film Super Deluxe is slated for release.

Nayanthara's Airaa was announced as a March 28th release but since Trident Arts is involved with the distribution of Super Deluxe, there is a possibility of Airaa getting postponed. Gautham Menon's Enai Nokki Paayum Thota starring Dhanush is also planning for March last week release but given the director's track record, some uncertainties continue to prevail.

In April,
Lawrence's Kanchana 3 is rumored to be preponed to April 12th from its earlier date. Vishal's Ayogya had the tag "April release" in its teaser but since there is another schedule pending, postponement cannot be ruled out.

Vikram's Kadaram Kondan is a summer release but the makers are yet to lock the release date. Karthi's untitled crime drama directed by Maanagaram fame Lokesh Kanagaraj is nearing completion, given its modest budget the makers can finish post-production soon for a Summer release but they haven't started planning for it yet.

Ever since
Sivakarthikeyan's Mr. Local was confirmed to release on May 1st, there has been a buzz that Pink remake may be postponed. Both the films have the same PRO "Suresh Chandra" so Studio Green is less likely to have announced Mr. Local's release date without discussing with Booney Kapoor

As of now,
Pink Remake is on track to wrap entire shooting by March end post which Booney Kapoor is expected to clarify about the release date. If Rajinikanth & Ajith films can release together and becomes hit films, Mr. Local & Pink Remake can also become hits even If they clash.

NGK starring Suriya just had its teaser release 10 days back but there is no clarity regarding its release date yet. The film's producer SR Prabhu has remained tight lipped ever since NGK was postponed from Diwali.

Since it has went over budget (Production cost 35 crores excluding
Suriya's pay), SR Prabhu is expected open up after he is done watching the first copy.
