KAAPPAAN : FORGET COMEBACK, FOR SURIYA ITS IMPORTANT TO SAVE HIS CAREER FROM BECOMING A TRAIN WRECK :-
Some of you might ask after reading the caption, Isn't Suriya's career already a train wreck ? Maybe, Maybe not. We don't know the extent of the damage done.
What we do know right now is the star's previous film NGK failed so badly that it directly reflects on the advance bookings of Kaappaan. In the last 10 years, NGK is the only Suriya film that fell short of 60 crores worldwide gross.
Anjaan has been blamed long enough, Suriya's fall to the bottom of the ladder is the result of the collective failure of promising projects. Post Anjaan, Suriya was under pressure to strike back but now he is in a position where he has to survive first to begin planning a strong comeback.
Venkat Prabhu stated he was trying something different and Masssu Engira Masssilamani will move away from his earlier films. Everything seemed to be in the film's favor, horror-comedy is a family friendly genre, Nayanthara and Venkat Prabhu were expected to boost box office prospects.
24's Posters (First, Second, Third Look Posters), Suriya's looks and the film's concept generated huge hype in Telugu, Kerala and many overseas markets.
Si3 was the third installment of Singam franchise
Despite being an adaptation, Thaanaa Serndha Koottam was directed by someone who is very different from Suriya's regular directors. It was the first time, Anirudh composed Music for Suriya.
NGK was tipped to be on the lines of Pudhupettai. Suriya's choice to return to darker roles also raised expectations.
If you observe closely, all of them have a pattern. These films looked promising when they were announced, both fans and general movie buffs expected them to be Suriya's comeback vehicle. But the hype gradually declined and towards release, it hits the screens like a Tier 2 actor film. Certain external factors and producers failed to sustain the expectations generated during the film's launch.
Among them, 24 and Si3 were two costly missed opportunities. 24 was Suriya's highest grosser wherever the hype was sustained, TN however was badly marketed and released. Regardless of content, Si3 could have been Suriya's comeback If not for the postponements and bad release date.
Kaappaan's hype and potential also rose and fell in a similar pattern. Kaappaan made on a budget of 80 crores is Suriya's 3rd film with KV Anand and also stars Mohanlal, Arya, Boman Irani in important roles. The hype should have been in a different league but NGK, release date postponements, songs and the first trailer cut resulted in moviegoers becoming disinterested in the film.
Kaappaan is now entirely dependent on public Word-Of-Mouth to find its ground and sustain. There is stiff competition in the next 2 weekends, If Kaappaan fails then Suriya's career will be paralyzed. Only If Kaappaan manages to at least breakeven (24 crores share in TN, 55 crores share worldwide), Suriya can start planning a comeback through one of his upcoming films.
NAMMA VEETU PILLAI :-
Fresh off the blockbuster success of Kadaikutty Singam, Pandiraj reunites with Sivakarthikeyan. Co-incidentally like Kaappaan, Namma Veetu Pillai is the 3rd collaboration of an actor-director duo. Sivakarthikeyan's claim to fame was a rural comedy film "Varuthapadatha Valibar Sangam". Pandiraj seems to be playing to Sivakarthikeyan's strengths while also keeping his rural family sentiment formula intact.
Its an important film for both as Sivakathikeyan has to bounce back from the massive failure of Mr Local while Pandiraj has to reinstate that he is a bankable director and Kadaikutty Singam was not an one film wonder.
What's strange is Sun Pictures is yet to officially confirm the release date (September 27th). The trailer also doesn't seem to have had desired reach. Are they waiting to see how people receive Kaappaan ? Even If that's the case Namma Veetu Pillai cannot move to a different date since the next weekend has 3 releases : Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy, Asuran & Sanga Thamizhan.
Though October 4th releases Asuran & Sanga Thamizhan are yet to start area-wise business, they target the same B & C centers as Namma Veetu Pillai. Unlike A centers (Multiplexes) B & C are single screens. If they select one biggie it would be hard to accommodate another film. If we assume a popular single screen is playing two biggies, then the 3rd one will have to settle for a screen of lesser quality.
It would be interesting to see how much screens can Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy (October 2nd) get and how much can it hold on to after 2 days. Super Good Films who are releasing Sye Raa in TN are in talks with Tirupur Subramanian and Red Giant for distribution in Coimbatore, Madurai & Salem. How Red Giant came into the picture is a peculiar case since they have already signed Namma Veetu Pillai while their association with Sye Raa is yet to be confirmed.
Its impractical to expect all these films to release in the scheduled dates and emerge successful. They will not only be eating into each other's revenue but the fate of one of them will be disastrous to say the least.
