Irumbuthirai :-

PLOT :-

white_devil (Arjun) the kingpin of a cyber crime network faces an obstacle in the form of one of his victims Major Kathiravan (Vishal) who is hell bent on seeking retribution.

PERFORMANCES :-

Major Kathiravan played by Vishal is that kind of socially conscious hero we are used to seeing in Vijay films. He also seems to be sketched as a physically aggressive character to specifically suit Vishal's action hero image. While this makes Kathiravan less unique compared to Mithran (Thani Oruvan) & Vikram (Vikram Vedha), its still neatly enacted by Vishal. Unlike his films before Thupparivaalan, Vishal's character here at least tries to do something smart instead of just action and punch dialogues.

The real show-stealer of Irumbuthirai is its villain white_devil. The villain doesn't even have half the screentime of the hero but the trepidation he spreads is deep and horrid. It reinstates the fact that a villain who attacks with mind games is far more dreadful than the one who attacks with blood and gore.

Among other actors Veteran Delhi Ganesh as Major Kathiravan's Father leaves a mark with his understated performance. While Samantha is also good as psychologist Rathi Devi, her role is quite limited but also has a part in the story and not a mere eye candy.

TECHNICALITIES :-

The tech-savvy art works add lot of class, style and looks authentic for a cyber crime thriller. George C Williams's cinematography was slick, special mention to the intensity he brings through closeup shots of the eyes of Kathiravan & white_devil.

Yuvan Shankar Raja's songs were forgettable except for Azhage which unfortunately or fortunately isn't present in the film. But after long time we could feel the adrailine rush in his background score, except for Irumbuthirai's teaser BGM which got repetitive as it was kinda overused in Vishal's action scenes.
Editor Ruben has done his part well, especially deciding to chop off Angry Bird & Azhage songs was a wise decision as the film's running time was already more than 2 hrs 40 mins.

SCRIPT AND DIRECTION :-

PS Mithran is one to watch out for. He is not only a knowledgeable writer but also a taut film maker. a rare combination as most directors despite being talented struggle to balance their responsibilities. Coming to the point, Irumbuthirai is a socially relevant subject that would have been far more effective If the hero was a common man. Still Mithran has put sincere effort to make sure the army man angle doesn't fell too out of place. Can't blame him entirely as Irumbuthirai's budget demanded a more crowd pleasing hero to become a commercially viable project.

Also it would have been awesome If we got to see more of Arjun's white_devil on screen. There was also a need to strike a balance as mind games start feeling like they were being overdone at some point but thankfully never makes us restless.

Despite not making full use of its potential Irumbuthirai ultimately works well as a high octane commercial film.
