36 Vayathinile Review :-

Plot :-

Vasanthi (Jyothika) is a middle aged clerk in some Collector Office, living with her Radio Jockey Husband Tamizh Selvan (Rahman) and School going teenage Daughter Mithila (Amritha Anil), When they had to move to Ireland to improve financially, Vasanthi's job request in Ireland is rejected due to her age, the film is all about how she proves to everyone that Age is no bar for Women Achievers .

Performances :-

Jyothika as Vasanthi -  Jyothika returns to the silver screen after 8 long years with a dazzling performance as Vasanthi, easily her best after Mozhi . Apart from appearing with no make up, her character also perfectly suits her age. her expressions & lip sync which we're among her finest qualities is still intact with her .
Others - Among others, Rahman is quite okay as Vasanthi's husband, Abhirami is decent as a brave modern women. While the performance of the old lady who befriends Vasanthi, deserves a special mention .

Technicalities :-

Cinematography R.Diwakaran - There are half a dozen scenes in the film which would have costed plenty of money to shoot with 1,000s of junior artists with a large public area blocked with police protection. But Diwakar has smartly shot upper angle shots of the locations combined with some insert shots showing Vasanthi among the public for few seconds, those scenes look realistic and at the same time won't cost much money .
Editing by Mahesh Narayan is apt with some well cut scenes, making use of the exotic insert shots with radial blur, ensures smooth continuity and grandeur visuals.
Music by Santosh Narayan - Not among the best works of the new age music composer, but still pretty standard and pleasant to hear songs like Rasaathi & Happy, while his Background Score makes the 2nd half more exciting.

Screenplay & Direction - Rosshan Andrews :-

The Malayalam Original version's story & screenplay we're written by Bobby Sanjay. In the Tamil remake Andrews was also extensively involved in the screenplay department. While he has managed to correct some flaws that we're in the original version, 36 Vayathinile lacks the spirit of How Old Are You, as its long but very detailed emotional scenes we're not there in Tamil version. Certain scenes do look forced to get sympathy for Middle aged women but at the end, they affect the film only to some extent, The screenplay was still subtle enough to save the film from becoming an over the top TV serial . Though I was very critical of the scenes where Vasanthi's husband Tamizh Selvan acts like a very routine husband who cares for his daughter but forgets about his wife's importance. After thinking for sometime I can't help but just come in terms with the truth, These kind of husbands do exist and I can't deny that.
Plus :-
Jyothika's performance
Cinematography
Editing
BGM in 2nd Half

Minus :-
Some logic flaws
Few forced scenes

The Final Word :  36 Vayathinile despite its flaws is a feel good family entertainer that highlights the beauty of middle aged women who stay strong despite our prejudice society's thinking and ageing issues.

Rating :  7.25/10
