Masss Review :-

Plot :-

Masss a.k.a. Massilamani (Suriya) and his friend Premji are orphans who con people to make money, but life changes for them when Masss gets superpowers in an accident through which he can talk with spirits.

Performances :-

Suriya as Masss & Shakthi - Suriya could have been used better in the role of Masss, as its the title character with so much potential, but Venkat Prabhu choose to give importance for other small characters this time, while there is nothing wrong it, Masss did deserve more screen time to make the film more crispier. His other role Shakthi is of a Sri Lankan Tamil Spirit who is hoping to seek vengeance against those who ruined his life, this is where we could see vintage Suriya, he has done a lot of hard work to make his performance look realistic .
Nayanthara as Malini - Though she is Masss's pair in the film, she barely got some screen time as the film's storyline has very little to do with her role, but she is quite okay & charming as the usual Nayanthara .
Others - The film has some well known character artists in small roles, among them Motta Rajendran rocked with his small comedy scenes, Riyaz Khan did very well in his meaty role , Pranitha was surprisingly good this time with less on glamour and more on emoting, Samuthirakani is just okay. Rest of them are adequate.

Technicalities :-

Cinematography by RD Rajasekhar - Among the major plus points in the film, flashy visuals, tilting and zooming was finally put to other good surprises  rather than just for scaring with closeup shots.
Editing by Praveen KL - This may be one of the least memorable works of this awesome editor, there is a feel that every scene in the film is one or two seconds longer than it should be, this cannot be considered as a minus, but the final cut could have been more crispier .
Special Effects - Good in parts, while few small sequences look cartoonish.
Music by Yuvan Shankar Raja - Songs are decent and good enough to create great excitement If it was given good choreography, better costumes and sound affects, but Yuvan impresses big with his BGM in 2nd half which played a major role in getting the grip right when the film was going in an unfocused direction.

Written & Directed by Venkat Prabhu :-

Venkat Prabhu has moved away from his usual whodunit style film making to make a supernatural thriller. While trying out something new is always a good thing as it bring freshness to the film, unfortunately Venkat Prabhu dis-appoints with a underwhelming screenplay that could have been much much better, each scene in 1st half feels little slow, but 2nd half is better and offers more fun, there are interesting sequences which look forcefully shortened thus making us feel little unsatisfied. In other words the film is highly influenced by The Sixth Sense & Ghost Town, to be more frank, it feels like a mashup of those films until Shakthi's flashback portions come to bring more freshness .
Plus :-
Shakthi
2nd Half
Motta Rajendran
BGM
Cinematography
Fight Choreography
Minus :-
Unfocused Direction
Lack of Detailing
Routine feel
The Final Word : Masss offers some fun & entertainment, but yet its strictly just one time watchable .
Rating : 6.75/10
