Purampokku Engira Podhuvudamai Review :-

Plot :-

Balusamy (Arya) a social activist and communist is sentenced to capitol punishment, with barely 28 Days remaining, Bala's allies seek the help of Yamalingam (Vijay Sethupathy) to rescue Bala from prison, but a righteous cop Mechalo (Shaam) stands in their way.

Performances :-

Arya as Balusamy - Arya was very natural throughout the film, shedding his lover bog image with a fat belly look and over grown beard. Though the film revolves around his character, his screen time is limited to his scenes in jail and small flashback, thus ends up being somewhat under utilized .
Vijay Sethupathy as Yamalingam - His character is of an Hangman, who is haunted by the memories of hanging convicts, he thinks that killing by hanging is a sin, Vijay Sethupathy got into the skin of the character and has given a terrific performance.
Shaam as Mechalo - Though quite flawed in his accent, his performance was still good for the most and is a 2nd try for comeback of sorts for him.
Karthika as Kuyili - She is particularly good in stunt sequences, while other aspects remain decent, could have been used better.
Others are adequate .

Technicalities :-

Cinematography by N.K. Ekambaram - Decent to some extent, could have been better If the Director was clear in his vision about the film.
Editing by N Ganesh Kumar -  Below par, but again he alone can't be blamed for it.
Music by Varshan - His songs are unbearable, be it the backing vocals or the orchestra, and these songs have no importance at all in the film .
Background Score by Srikanth Deva - Not as bad I thought he was, though his BGM tends to be over the top sometimes, its still within its limits, a score in the 2nd half ripped off from Lord of The Rings adds some thrills to few moments.
Production Design by Selva Kumar - Perhaps the biggest highlight or saving grace of the film is its prison erected at a cost of over Rs. 2.5 crores. The set is updated with realistic features, the prison becomes a character of its own in Balu Samy's escape plan.

Written & Directed by S.P.Jananathan :-

When u watch Purampokku, u'll definitely have that awkward feeling, Is this really from the same Director who made the Forest Thriller Peranmai . Despite few Ignorable flaws, it was still an engaging thriller with some realism intact . But in Purampokku the Director has lost his visions. Was he trying to make a docu-drama or a commercial film or something more different, whatever he tried the film's screenplay is huge letdown . Few may disagree with me but its true, the film was thrilling and true to its concept only for 30 mins in the 2nd half where the escape plan for Balusamy was going great with many new tricks that we're hardly used in Indian films before. Keeping that aside the film loses grip almost every time when it looked like it will pick up with some unexpected twists.
Plus :-
Vijay Sethupathy
Production Design
Detailing
Escape Plan
Some dialogues.

Minus :-
Third Act
Under used characters
Logic flaws
Direction
Music
Slow pace

The Final Word : Vijay Sethupathy, The Prison set and Detailing are few good reasons to watch, If they aren't good enough for you, then I guess there is nothing else worthy.
